Bonds.  Returns change when you buy and sell 

Simple example.
You buy and intend to hold-to-maturity Bondco's 3 year 5% annual pay fixed rate bond.

At the end of the first year the price of the bond has changed.  In one scenario it has gone up to £102 and in another, it has fallen to £95.
